Conscious: Think of your conscious mind as the part of your thinking that’s happening right now. It’s where your thoughts, feelings, and senses are active. This is the part that helps you think, make decisions, and be aware of yourself and your surroundings. It’s like the control center for your immediate experiences.
- Here’s the catch: your conscious mind has limitations. It can’t hold a lot of information, so it relies on your subconscious and preconscious minds to store things like memories, pattern recognition, and habits. So, while your conscious mind is great for thinking on the spot and experiencing the present, it leans on the other parts of your mind as a reference manual on which mental programs or behaviors to use.
- When you’re working on reprogramming the subconscious mind, the aim is to provide a reference manual for the unconscious aspects of your psyche.
Preconscious: These are the thoughts, memories, or information that are not currently in your conscious awareness but can be easily brought into consciousness when needed. These thoughts and memories are like files stored in the back of your mental filing cabinet, ready to be pulled out when you consciously direct your attention towards them.
- For example: Imagine you’re trying to recall the name of a childhood friend you haven’t thought about in years. You can’t immediately remember the name, but it’s not lost forever. Your preconscious mind holds that information. You might continue with your day, not actively thinking about it, but the thought lingers in the background…Later, as you’re driving or taking a shower, your mind wanders, and suddenly, the friend’s name pops into your conscious awareness.
Subconscious: The subconscious mind refers to the part of our mental processes that operates beyond our conscious awareness. It contains thoughts, memories, feelings, and desires that are not readily accessible to our conscious thought. You’ve probably heard of it being referred to as an an iceberg; the conscious mind is the tip visible above the water, while the unconscious mind lies beneath the surface. Many cognitive processes, including automatic thoughts and behaviors, are influenced by the unconscious mind. These processes are often formed through our prior experiences, conditioning, and the narratives we adopt from the external world.
- It is responsible for regulating bodily functions (e.g., heartbeat, respiration, digestion), storing emotional experiences, and influencing dreams. Unlike the preconscious, the subconscious is more difficult to access intentionally, and its contents often require therapeutic techniques like hypnosis or deep introspection to uncover and understand

Where Do My Subconscious Beliefs Come From?

8 Ways to Reprogram the Subconscious Mind

Specific therapeutic techniques like revivification, age regression, future visualization, autosuggestions, and affirmations are powerful tools for reshaping thought patterns. They provide a safe and comfortable environment for individuals to delve into their inner thoughts and emotions, perhaps even returning to childhood memories when the seed of a particular belief was first planted into their subconscious.
The key to reprogramming our subconscious lies in transforming intention into action. It’s more than just a case of “fake it till you make it”; instead, it’s about actively engaging in the process. This transformation is deeply rooted in the concept of neuroplasticity, the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt and change. To rewire our brains, we must actively make progress, face challenges head on, endure hardships, and invest our focused efforts in adapting until it becomes an automatic response.
We will explore 8 essential tools employed by hypnotherapists and life coaches to assist their clients in breaking free from undesirable habits and behaviors. For each technique, a script sample will be provided that you can adapt and apply either personally or with your clients.
1. Suggestion & Autosuggestion:
Suggestion is a fundamental element of hypnosis. It involves the process of influencing someone’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors through verbal or non-verbal cues. During hypnosis, a hypnotist uses suggestions to guide the subject’s thoughts and create a state of heightened suggestibility. These suggestions can be direct or indirect, and they are often used to help individuals achieve specific goals or address issues such as quitting smoking, managing pain, or reducing anxiety. The power of suggestion is central to the effectiveness of hypnotherapy.
Autosuggestion also known as self-suggestion, is a technique in which an individual deliberately and repetitively communicates specific thoughts or affirmations to themselves. The goal of autosuggestion is to influence the subconscious mind to adopt a particular belief or behavior. It is a self-help method used to reprogram the subconscious mind and replace negative or limiting beliefs with positive ones. This technique is often associated with Emile Coué, a French psychologist, who popularized the use of positive affirmations to improve one’s well-being.
There is a psychological prerequisite to writing autosuggestions: They should have a notable intensity. Here are different forms of suggestions.
Spontaneous suggestions – these are ideas or thoughts that naturally arise in a person’s mind without external influence. These suggestions can come from the individual’s own thoughts, emotions, and experiences. When writing these for a client, it’s important to use assessment tools and targeted questions so they can be incorporated into the script.
Reflective Suggestions – these involve encouraging a person to think deeply and contemplate a particular concept or idea, designed to engage critical thinking, decision-making, and the exploration of their own thought processes.
Induced Suggestion – these are deliberate and intentional suggestions delivered in a hypnotic trance. They can either be indirect or direct, passive or assertive.
Revivification can be a powerful tool for rewiring unhealthy habits and behaviors as it involves accessing and exploring memories that may be buried deep within the subconscious mind and can be used to address various issues, including trauma, phobias, and limiting beliefs. It can also be referred to as Age Regression. Once in the client is induced into a receptive and relaxed state, they can be guided back in time, and asked to recall specific events or periods in their life. This regression can take them back to childhood, adolescence, or in the new age/spiritually community, even to past lives. This technique can also be employed to retrieve positive experiences and emotions, which can then be harnessed to enhance current feelings of emotional well-being.

3. Time Distortion:
Time Distortion is a fascinating method to reprogram the subconscious as it involves altering our perception of time, making it seem faster or slower than it actually is. It is best used in pain management, childbirth, addiction treatment, sexual dysfunction, and dream analysis.
4. Future Progression
Future Progression– Inspired by Hans Vahinger’s “as if” philosophy, revolves around the magnetic allure of a future objective. This approach taps into the power of amplifying one’s desires and imagination. Research has consistently shown that individuals are driven with greater intensity when they set their sights on distant goals. By harnessing these aspirations, one can effectively transform them into potent self-fulfilling prophecies. This process guides individuals to naturally align their actions with their deeply held beliefs and expectations about future behaviors.
Anchoring is a powerful technique that works best with eliminating bad habits and addictions. It revolves around connecting a precise sensory stimulus or cue to a specific emotional state or behavior. the initial step is to pinpoint the precise emotional state or behavior that the client wishes to attain or transform. Once this target is clearly defined, it involves establishing an association between the desired state or behavior and a chosen word, gesture, or image.
6. Systematic Desensitization:
Systematic Desensitization – Originally developed by psychiatrist Joseph Wolpe in the 1950s, this technique can be used to help individuals overcome phobias, anxiety disorders, and other emotions or psychological issues. The main goal of systematic desensitization is to reduce or eliminate an individual’s irrational fears or anxieties by gradually exposing them to the feared stimulus in a controlled and relaxed manner. This process involves several key steps, and it is crucial to seek proper training and guidance, particularly when applying it to address serious mental health conditions. Remember to always practice within your competency. Relaxation training, a thorough understanding of the client’s fear hierarchy, and a carefully structured progression through exposure are paramount in this process.
7. The Somatic Bridge:
The Somatic Bridge is a therapeutic approach that helps people connect with their unspoken emotions by paying attention to their bodily sensations. It’s also referred to as Gendlin’s Focusing Technique or Somatic Reappraisal. It is particularly useful for those who tend to be overly logical and have trouble identifying their feelings (left-brain oriented). The purpose here is not merely to discuss or analyze sensations, but rather to actively immerse oneself in the present moment. This entails sitting patiently and silently, acknowledging distractions as they arise, and ultimately allowing one’s own body to guide them towards unearthing repressed emotions and addressing tension associated with stress and other concerns. It’s paramount to approach this technique with caution, particularly if you lack formal training as a practitioner. Trauma can run deep and some techniques may not be suitable for individuals who are prone to experiencing psychosis.
8. Narratives, Metaphors, & Storytelling
Narratives, Metaphors, & Storytelling – The incorporation of these techniques play a crucial role in the process of reprogramming old habits and belief systems. By gently challenging negative thought patterns, they provide valuable insights and serve as persuasive tools to introduce new perspectives. These engaging stories capture our attention and effectively bypass resistance, creating a receptive environment. As we immerse ourselves in these narratives, our brains release neurochemicals that enhance receptivity, making it easier to embed positive ideas, emotions, and thoughts within our unconscious minds.
The most important aspect of reprogramming one’s subconscious mind is repetition, repetition, repetition. This means that in order to create a new thought pattern or behavior, we must consistently practice and repeat the desired action until it becomes part of our automatic response.
It’s not enough to just think positive thoughts once; they need to be repeated over and over again so they become ingrained into the subconscious mind until they become a reality. The same goes for any negative thought patterns or behaviors; in order for us to overcome them, we must consistently replace them with positive alternatives until they no longer hold power over us. Repetition helps us build new neural pathways which makes the desired change permanent and accessible on a deep level.
